1935 GMC Police Patrol Wagon
A Milwaukee Police Icon, Preserved for Future Generations
On September 24, 2024, the Milwaukee Police Historical Society proudly became the new caretaker of a remarkable piece of MPD history — a 1935 GMC Police Patrol Wagon, affectionately known as “Jimmy.” This historic vehicle was generously gifted by the American Legion Milwaukee Police Post 415, whose members maintained and showcased Jimmy for more than eight decades. The transfer was facilitated by MPHS board member and Legion 1st Vice Commander Fred Haas, a longtime member of the “wagon crew” who kept Jimmy roadworthy and parade‑ready.

A Wagon With Stories to Tell
For over 90 years, Jimmy has been a familiar sight at Milwaukee-area parades and community events. Highlights from Jimmy’s long career include:
- Participation in the Great Circus Parade
- Appearances in numerous Milwaukee and surrounding community parades
- A cameo in the Dillinger movie, where Mark Harmon rode in the prisoner compartment
- Rides given to movie stars such as Ernest Borgnine and other dignitaries during public events
Jimmy isn’t just a vehicle — he’s a rolling piece of Milwaukee history.
Parade-Era Modifications
To keep Jimmy active and functional during decades of public appearances, several updates were made:
- Upgraded to a 1937 Oldsmobile straight‑6 engine
- Warning bell relocated from the front fender to behind the passenger door
- Spare tire moved rearward
- Screened openings added to both sides of the rear passenger compartment
- Installation of a working vintage fender‑mounted “Mars” oscillating warning light
- Wheels repainted red; body color changed from black to dark blue with black fenders
These changes helped Jimmy remain parade‑ready while preserving his historic character.

Restoration in Progress
Jimmy is currently undergoing restoration to preserve his structure, appearance, and mechanical integrity. Updates will be shared as restoration milestones are reached.
